Department of Water Supply and Sewarage, under the Ministry of Water Supply and Sanitation is the lead department for implementing water supply and sanitation projects in Nepal. The department is implementing various programs and projects through its regional, divisional, central and project offices to meet its objective of providing safe, convenient, adequate water supply and sanitation facilities to all, and with particular emphasis on lower-income groups. The broad objective of department also focuses on reducing the incident of water borne disease prevailing in the country and on reducing suffering and drudgery of woman and children, who have been responsible for collecting water and maintaining domestic sanitation and hygiene.

Rapid urbanization has created high stress on existing water supply schemes and these systems are in need of rehabilitation, reconstruction and service extension. Thus at this context rehabilitation and reconstruction of non functioning systems has also been identified as major aspect in meeting the national agenda of providing safe, reliable and adequate water to all. For providing safe, reliable, and adequate water to the growing urban population through sustainable system, based on participatory approach and cost recovery modality, GoN has started the Co financing water supply and sanitation project. The project is funded by GoN, and is being implemented by DWSS. This project is being implemented since fiscal year 2068/69. The project is based on public private partnership modality and is focused to ensure the enhanced quality and service level of water supply projects in urban area against traditional systems.

ABOUT US

For providing safe, reliable, and adequate water to the growing urban population through sustainable system, based on participatory approach and cost recovery modality, GoN has started the Co financing water supply and sanitation project. With the objective of supporting interested, potential and qualified Water user association/communities for improvement in the living standard of the people by providing safe, reliable, adequate and sustainable water supply and sanitation schemes on fast track basis co financing water supply and sanitation project modality has been in operation. The current assignment of feasibility study is conducted after receiving the request from the community. The study will review the felt need and outline the feasibility of the requested project. The study will establish the idea on technical, social and economical feasibility of the project. The feasibility study will assist in project selection and project prioritization for implementation. Moreover, the study will make project selection process more clear, systematic and transparent.

The project also aims to provide improved service level from conventional basic level in response to the change in living style of people, on demand and cost sharing basis with cost recovery principle at least to user's side contribution.

In addition to the above, the project aims to support Water User and Sanitation Committee (WUSC) of the project area to operate and maintain the project on commercial and sustainable manner by enhancing their knowledge, skill, capacity and efficiency. Supporting and involving the WUSC and private sectors of the project area in supply area extension and service level improvement has also been envisioned in this project. Implementation of water safety plan and raising awareness about water quality and sanitation on healthy life among users are the imbedded objective of the project.
